• The DSM Personal Care Business Unit is launching a new breakthrough anti-aging peptide complex, SYN-TC. The launch further extends DSM’s successful SYN-Peptides product range, offering an exciting new anti-aging cosmetic ingredient with rapid action for skin smoothing, according to the company.

The beauty of smooth skin is greatly valued by consumers. They seek personal care solutions for the skin that are not only effective but also fast-acting. SYN-TC sets high standards on both counts, delivering results in only 28 days, according to the company.

SYN-TC makes use of three tailor–made peptides (short polymers of amino acid monomers linked by peptide bonds) to increase the formation of undamaged, stable and homogenous collagen types in the skin. These best-in-class synthetic peptides have been formulated and combined to achieve a visible benefit for smoother skin and an overall improved young looking skin appearance, according to DSM.

“We are very proud to further extend our leading SYN-Peptides portfolio by the addition of SYN-TC,” said Dr. Mathias Gempeler, global marketing manager skin care, DSM Personal Care Business Unit. “It offers a completely new dimension in skin smoothing. This breakthrough product demonstrates yet again DSM’s dedication to deliver innovations to the market that make a visible difference for consumers.”

HallStar Introduces New Photostabilizer
• The HallStar Company has launched Polycrylene S1, a new singlet-quenching photostabilizer that helps formulators meet FDA standards for broad-spectrum claims and enhances the water resistance of sun care and daily wear products, according to the company.

Polycrylene S1 allows formulators to combine active ingredients once considered too photo-unstable to be effective. Polycrylene S1 replaces the triplet-quenching portion of Polycrylene (INCI: Polyester-8) with a singlet-state quencher. The result is a powerful photostabilizer that improves sunscreens and daily wear products, providing better UV protection. Like Polycrylene, Polycrylene S1 is also a film-forming polymer that enhances the substantivity of sunscreen formulations.

“The sun is a powerful adversary to many active ingredients. For instance, it makes UV filters like avobenzone start to lose effectiveness almost immediately upon exposure,” said John Paro, HallStar president, chairman, and CEO. “Innovative photostabilizers like Polycrylene S1 help skin and sun care formulators meet and exceed consumer requirements for better UVA and UVB protection in a product that’s easy to apply and a pleasure to wear.”

According to the FDA Final Rule issued in 2011, sunscreens must havea critical wavelength of at least 370 to earn the broad-spectrum designation. That benchmark is not feasible without including a UVA filter such as avobenzone. Singlet-state quenchers like Polycrylene S1 provide faster, more powerful ways to prevent or slow UVA filter degradation, making it easier for formulators to achieve the broad-spectrum designation.

In addition, Polycrylene S1 enhances water resistance, making it ideal for use in athletic sunscreens and daily wear products to be used at the pool and at the beach. It also provides a pleasant skin feel and is suitable for use in sprays, lotions, creams, balms and gels.

Honeywell Solstice Propellant Is Not a VOC
• The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added Honeywell’s Solstice Propellant (HFO-1234ze) to the list of compounds excluded from the definition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
According to the company, the EPA based its decision on the propellant’s low photochemical reactivity and negligible contribution to the generation of tropospheric ozone. The classification will help aerosol formulators develop products that meet federal VOC regulations, adding another key environmental benefit to the product’s very low global warming potential.

“The EPA’s decision means that there is no longer an environmental trade-off required when selecting propellants. In the past, formulators had to choose between flammable propellants like hydrocarbons and dimethyl ether, which have low global warming potentials (GWPs) but are VOCs, or a nonflammable propellant, like HFC-134a, which is not a VOC but has a higher GWP,” said Terrence Hahn, vice president and general manager of Honeywell Fluorine Products. “Now Honeywell’s Solstice Propellant combines two highly desirable properties—low GWP and non-VOC—along with non-flammability, for a triple win for the environment.”

Honeywell’s non-flammable, non-ozone depleting Solstice Propellant has a global warming potential of 6. It is an alternative to HFC-134a and HFC-152a, two propellants in common use today, which have GWPs of 1,430 and 124, respectively, as well as the flammable hydrocarbon propellants. Solstice Propellant can be used in various aerosol applications including personal and household care products, dusters, warning systems, industrial cleaners, novelty aerosol products and others.

The argan nut is harvested to produce argan oil, a hot ingredient at Arista.

Arista Offers Argan Oil For Skin Care, Hair Care
• Arista Industries now offers high quality argan oil, which has many benefits in skin care and hair care products due to the abundance of nutrients inherent in its composition, according to the company.

Rich in mono- and polyunsaturates and antioxidants such as tocopherol, vitamin E and omega-6, it is also a natural source of carotenoids, naturally-occurring fat-soluble pigments which are said to protect skin from UV damage.

Sourced from sustainable co-ops in Morocco, argan oil is extracted from kernels of the argan tree. The oil helps protect hair and skin from premature aging, UV damage and environmental stresses. It is also a gentle moisturizer for dry skin and damaged hair.

Croda Launches Phosphate Ester With Unique Sensory Profile
• While customers are generally inclined to purchase products based on advertised benefits, the sensory aspect of personal care creams and lotions is a key element in a consumer’s perception of a product and plays an important role in her decision to re-purchase, according to Croda.

Therefore, Croda has launched Crodafos BES-70, a 70% active phosphate ester based on behenyl chemistry that has a distinctly different initial feel from other phosphate esters, according to the company. In addition, its high activity level allows for increased flexibility in formulating for sensory appeal. This material has a natural substantivity to the skin and an extreme pH tolerance, creating smooth viscous emulsions across a wide pH range. Crodafos BES-70 is an excellent choice for acne treatments, which are low pH systems delivering actives such as salicylic acid. It is also well suited for high pH systems such as relaxers as well as in applications with neutral pH such as sunscreens, creams or lotions.

In addition, Crodafos BES-70 works well for anti-aging formulations where the phosphate ester lamellar structure helps with the delivery of actives to the skin, ensuring that the anti-aging ingredients reach their intended destination for maximum efficacy. The unique sensory profile of Crodafos BES-70 adds additional options to Croda’s extensive emulsifier offerings.
